Tom Cruise Updates On Top Gun 2

 

The proposed Top Gun sequel that has been rumored for years took a major step forward a couple months ago when Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, two writers that worked on both Thor and X-Men: First Class this past summer, were hired to write the script for the project. Since then, however, there hasn't been a peep about its forward progress. In fact, one major question hanging in the air was the possibility of Tom Cruise reprising his role as Maverick from the first film. Thankfully the star is currently doing press rounds for Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol and has given MTV a status update.

While Cruise didn't explicitly say that he had plans to star in the film - when asked what kind of role he would play his response was "I don't know, we're working on it." - he did confirm that he is involved in the process of getting a Top Gun 2 made. Talking about how he became involved, the actor said that it began with a desire to work with Tony Scott again, and that it blossomed from there. "I said to Tony I want to make another movie with him," Cruise said. "He and I haven't made a film since Days of Thunder. Tony and I and Jerry [Bruckheimer], we never thought that we would do it again. Then they started to come to us with these ideas of where it is now. I thought, 'Wow, that would be ... what we could do now.'"

Previous reports about Top Gun 2 have said that the film will be about unmanned fighters, also known as drones, but that was all the way back when Scott was promoting Unstoppable. With Miller and Stentz on board the story could completely change.
