Ridley Scott Says New Blade Runner Project Probably A Sequel

There's been chatter about a possible new Blade Runner film for years. Way back in 2007 Ridley Scott said he didn't want anything to do with it. More recently, the project began to gain steam, and there was word that it could be a prequel, a sequel, or an outright reboot of the property. A few months ago the producers said the film wasn't likely to hit screens before 2014, and that Harrison Ford was unlikely to be part of it. Now Ridley Scott himself has provided a few new details. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy blog, Scott said the new Blade Runner film is "liable to be a sequel."

Don't get your hopes up for any familiar faces, however. It will be a sequel in the sense of existing in the same world and possibly dealing with the same sort of themes, but not continuing with the same characters. Scott put yet another nail in the coffin of a theoretical Harrison Ford/Deckard return by saying, "No, not really." That's almost certainly for the best. Blade Runner is damn near perfect as it is; if we really must return to the universe on the big screen, let's explore a different corner of it rather than conjuring up some unlikely excuse to see the Further Adventures of Rick Deckard, Possible Replicant.

As for when we might see the Blade Runner in theaters, Scott doesn't drop any specific dates but does say that "we're quite a long way in, actually." He's currently in the process of trying to find a writer for the film. If that's the case, that 2014 prediction probably isn't too far off base. In the meantime, we've got Scott's sorta-kinda-maybe Alien prequel Prometheus to look forward to on March 21st, 2012.

Taken 2 Adds Brothers And Sisters' Luke Grimes

One of the things that worked so well about Taken was the simplicity of the story. Man loves daughter. Daughter gets kidnapped by human traffickers in Europe. Man tears through France using a “very particular set of skills” to get daughter back. Add Liam Neeson into the equation and the film was bound to be a winner. Will the sequel turn out as well? It’s hard to tell at this point.

The fact that Liam Neeson is on board for the sequel, along with Maggie Grace and Famke Janssen does help the cause, though the premise isn’t quite as simple.The sequel which is being directed by Olivier Megaton, will have retired CIA agent Bryan Mills (Neeson) and his ex-wife Lenore (Janssen) held captive by a man named Murad (played by Rade Sherbedgia), the father of one of the kidnappers killed in the first movie. This leaves their daughter Kim (Maggie Grace) to track them down and rescue them.

Kim will apparently have a love interest in this movie, which leads us to today’s news. According to Variety Luke Grimes has been cast in the film. The site says he “will likely have to help her rescue her parents from the baddie's clutches.” That’s all we know about his part, other than that he's Kim's love interest. It’ll be interesting to see how big of a role he plays in getting Kim to her parents. At this point, we don’t even know if Maggie Grace’s character has traded in her aspirations of becoming a singer in exchanged for following in her father’s footsteps. A bit of CIA training might make her attempt to rescue them a bit more plausible, but perhaps it’ll be Grimes’ character that provides the necessary expertise to the mission.

There's also the oddity that is Steven Soderbergh doing second unit work on the movie, but that's a whole other thing.

The Hunger Games will hit theaters on March 23, 2012.

Elijah Wood Lands Serial Killer Role In Maniac

After the insanely successful The Lord of the Rings films, Elijah Wood had a problem. After playing the wide-eyed Hobbit Frodo for three films, he was in serious danger of being typecast. If he didn't act quickly, he could be consigned to a future full of family films or acting opposite singing puppets. His solution? A turn in Sin City as the demented, mute serial killer/cannibal Kevin (pictured above). The role proved Wood could be incredibly creepy when he tried, and all without saying a word. He's also shown a knack for mentally unstable characters by carrying on frequent conversations with a dog on FX's Wilfred. Now it looks like Wood will be tapping into his dark side again for a new role in the indie movie Maniac.

Deadline reports that Wood will be playing yet another serial killer as the lead in Maniac. To be directed by Franck Khalfoun, Maniac casts Wood as a killer who uses the internet to identify and stalk his victims, spurred on by memories of his abusive mother. To add the cherry on top of the psychopath sundae, he works in a shop that sells antique mannequins. That would be creepy even if he weren't a serial killer.

In spite of the mannequins, Maniac is only the second most disturbing project in Wood's immediate future. He's also reprising his role as a dancing CGI penguin in Happy Feet 2 later this month. The horror...the horror...

A Good Day To Die Hard Shortlist Includes Aaron Paul, Liam Hemsworth, James Badge Dale And More

Following the news last month that the fifth installment of the Die Hard franchise, A Good Day To Die Hard, would include an adventure involving both John McClane and his son, a short list of actors appeared online suggesting what 20th Century Fox was looking for in a McClane Jr. According to the initial story, Ben Foster, Paul Dano, Aaron Paul and Milo Ventimiglia were all being looked at for the part. Now that list has been updated and while it isn't any smaller, it is noteworthy which name is still around for round two.

Deadline says that Fox has narrowed it down to four actors to play the McClane scion in A Good Day To Die Hard: Liam Hemsworth (who was also recently rumored for one of the male leads in Stephanie Meyer's The Host); James Badge Dale (who has been popping up everywhere recently and is currently in production on Marc Foster's World War Z); DJ Cotrona (who is hard at work filming G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation in New Orleans) and the aforementioned Aaron Paul (who has spent most of his career on the small screen as of late, mostly on the incredible Breaking Bad). John Moore is attached to direct the film based on a script by Skip Woods.

While the likelihood of each actor getting the job isn't mentioned, it is noted that Paul's commitment to the next season of his hit AMC show may prevent him from taking the part, which would be a true shame. The plot of the film revolves around McClane's son getting arrested in Moscow, Russia and needing to be bailed out, and who better to play a wayward young man than the guy who plays Jesse Pinkman?
