Hunger Games Full Trailer Will World Premiere On Monday

Listen up, Hunger Games fans. Lionsgate just revealed that the world premiere of the full Games trailer will world premiere on ABC’s Good Morning America this coming Monday, Nov. 14. It’s going to be a long weekend of waiting, no?

According to a release, co-star Josh Hutcherson – who plays Peeta Mellark in Gary Ross’s anticipated adaptation - -will be on hand to introduce the full teaser during the daily television program’s 8 a.m. hour, which is the highest-rated hour of the show. In addition to airing nationwide, Lionsgate reveals that the trailer will be beamed on Good Morning America’s jumbotron in New York City’s Times Square. That’s pretty damn cool.

It’s the latest in what has been a consistent marketing campaign for what Lionsgate hopes becomes a Twilight-sized or Harry Potter-sized film franchise. In August, an extremely brief clip aired on the MTV Video Music Awards. Since then, we’ve seen posters and viral sites attempting to draw fans into the Hunger Games experience.

The GMA clip, no doubt, will give fans the longest look at footage from the anticipated action-thriller. For those who don’t know, The Hunger Games adapts Suzanne Collins’ futuristic YA novel about a resilient teen (Jennifer Lawrence) who volunteers to participate in a televised game of survival in order to spare her family members. Liam Hemsworth, Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks and Donald Sutherland co-star in Ross’s film, which is due in theaters on March 23.

Breaking news! Bill Condon’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Part 1 is pre-selling tickets at a dizzying rate. In other news, water is wet, ice is freezing cold, and Brett Ratner’s a misogynistic pig.

But wait. We actually have stats to back up the furious fan response to the latest chapter of Hollywood strangest love triangle. According to a press release, Condon’s first stab at a Twilight adaptation is accounting for 72% of Fandango’s weekly ticket sales. Impressive, given the fact that Twilight doesn’t even open this week. What percentage will it hit next week, when it’s actually scheduled to reach theaters?

Fandango goes on to report that more than 1,000 showtimes already have sold out in advance of the sequel’s opening. Certain theater owners reportedly are racing the clock to add additional showtimes to meet the fan demand. To paraphrase Field of Dreams, if you screen it, they will come.

The ticket-vending site also offers up a few stats based on reader polls. Roughly 82% of the users who’ve purchased tickets to Breaking Dawn say they believe the action in the trailers looks better in Part 1 than it did in previous Twilight movies. (Strange, as Condon’s not really known as an action director.) Meanwhile, 48% plan to see the movie on opening night. And if they’re anything like my teenage nieces, they’ll see it multiple times in one day. Seriously.

Ridley Scott Says New Blade Runner Project Probably A Sequel

There's been chatter about a possible new Blade Runner film for years. Way back in 2007 Ridley Scott said he didn't want anything to do with it. More recently, the project began to gain steam, and there was word that it could be a prequel, a sequel, or an outright reboot of the property. A few months ago the producers said the film wasn't likely to hit screens before 2014, and that Harrison Ford was unlikely to be part of it. Now Ridley Scott himself has provided a few new details. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy blog, Scott said the new Blade Runner film is "liable to be a sequel."

Don't get your hopes up for any familiar faces, however. It will be a sequel in the sense of existing in the same world and possibly dealing with the same sort of themes, but not continuing with the same characters. Scott put yet another nail in the coffin of a theoretical Harrison Ford/Deckard return by saying, "No, not really." That's almost certainly for the best. Blade Runner is damn near perfect as it is; if we really must return to the universe on the big screen, let's explore a different corner of it rather than conjuring up some unlikely excuse to see the Further Adventures of Rick Deckard, Possible Replicant.

As for when we might see the Blade Runner in theaters, Scott doesn't drop any specific dates but does say that "we're quite a long way in, actually." He's currently in the process of trying to find a writer for the film. If that's the case, that 2014 prediction probably isn't too far off base. In the meantime, we've got Scott's sorta-kinda-maybe Alien prequel Prometheus to look forward to on March 21st, 2012.

Taken 2 Adds Brothers And Sisters' Luke Grimes

One of the things that worked so well about Taken was the simplicity of the story. Man loves daughter. Daughter gets kidnapped by human traffickers in Europe. Man tears through France using a “very particular set of skills” to get daughter back. Add Liam Neeson into the equation and the film was bound to be a winner. Will the sequel turn out as well? It’s hard to tell at this point.

The fact that Liam Neeson is on board for the sequel, along with Maggie Grace and Famke Janssen does help the cause, though the premise isn’t quite as simple.The sequel which is being directed by Olivier Megaton, will have retired CIA agent Bryan Mills (Neeson) and his ex-wife Lenore (Janssen) held captive by a man named Murad (played by Rade Sherbedgia), the father of one of the kidnappers killed in the first movie. This leaves their daughter Kim (Maggie Grace) to track them down and rescue them.

Kim will apparently have a love interest in this movie, which leads us to today’s news. According to Variety Luke Grimes has been cast in the film. The site says he “will likely have to help her rescue her parents from the baddie's clutches.” That’s all we know about his part, other than that he's Kim's love interest. It’ll be interesting to see how big of a role he plays in getting Kim to her parents. At this point, we don’t even know if Maggie Grace’s character has traded in her aspirations of becoming a singer in exchanged for following in her father’s footsteps. A bit of CIA training might make her attempt to rescue them a bit more plausible, but perhaps it’ll be Grimes’ character that provides the necessary expertise to the mission.

From what I understand the plot is similar to the Japanese cult classic Battle Royale, but will also somehow try to get away with having a PG-13 rating. There's also the fact that Lawrence is one of the best young talents going right now and she is backed by a stellar cast that includes Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrellson, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Sutherland, Toby Jones, Josh Hutherson and Liam Hemsworth. There's also the oddity that is Steven Soderbergh doing second unit work on the movie, but that's a whole other thing.

The Hunger Games will hit theaters on March 23, 2012.
