Charlie Sheen To Bring His Tiger Blood To Scary Movie 5?

Charlie Sheen To Bring His Tiger Blood To Scary Movie 5? image
Obviously Charlie Sheen has become the latest in a long line of tabloid pariahs who somehow has managed to turn the country’s incessant mockery of him into sheer morbid curiosity. What will this self-proclaimed warlock will do with his life? He managed to get himself fired from his long-running sit-com Two and a Half Men, and Comedy Central took advantage of his situation by roasting him, but Sheen isn’t down for the count just yet.

ThinkMcFlyThink has it that Sheen has found himself on the cast list for Scary Movie 5, returning for a third time to the inexplicably popular spoof franchise. Harvey Weinstein reportedly offered Sheen a role in the film back in March, again taking advantage of the struggling actor’s infamy. The site says that the Major League actor only just now decided that he’d take the role, but doesn’t say if he’s just looking for an income stream (likely), or if he actually feels like he might better that movie.

It's doubtful that adding what will no doubt be thousands of "Winning!", "Tiger blood!", and "Adonis DNA" jokes will make this fifth installment in the Scary Movie franchise tolerable, but they’re going to give it their all anyway. Last month Anthony Anderson reportedly joined the cast along with Regina Hall and Kevin Hart, filling in the cast of a movie no one seems to know how to approach. At one point, 5 was just going to be a reboot, which makes no sense whatsoever. Maybe they’ll just take the Final Destination approach and call it THE Scary Movie. Who knows, and frankly who cares.

Charlie Sheen’s weird meltdown will fade from people’s memory fast enough and he’ll only be able to hang onto this fleeting fame for so long. If this movie happens, and it’s still a big "if," it’ll be interesting to see what Sheen manages to pull out of this little ordeal.

Adam Sandler And Lady Sandler In Official Jack And Jill Poster

I’ve come full circle on Dennis Dugan’s Jack and Jill. That first trailer suggested that Adam Sandler’s latest comedy, which features the A-list comedian playing a twin brother AND sister, was a crime against a humanity. The sight of Sandler in drag was an assault on anyone’s eyeballs. The laughs were nonexistent. And the idea that Al Pacino would stoop so low as to play a version of himself that’s attracted to female Sandler makes me want to pop in a copy of Dog Day Afternoon, rock back and forth, and weep for a fallen idol.

Now? Now I can’t wait to see it. Why fight the inevitable? Sandler will continue to crank out his brand of humor. The masses will flock. And I can hope against hope that Dugan makes the movie so strange that I find something funny about the whole mess. All of this leads me to the film’s latest poster, which gives you a closer look at Lady Sandler than you probably ever wanted. We have it below (and in Hi Res in our Blend Film Database):

I love the tagline. "And it ain't pretty." It's like Sandler's just lobbing softballs, begging us to smack them out of the park. Jack and Jill co-stars Katie Holmes, Dana Carvey, Regis Philbin, Tim Meadows, Shaquille O’Neal and, as mentioned, Pacino as a horny, apparently blind version of himself. It comes out on Nov. 11, and should break the $100 million mark by Dec. 1. Say a prayer for humanity.

Crazy, Stupid, Love Will Bring Laughs And Grief To Blu-Ray In November

Crazy, Stupid, Love Will Bring Laughs And Grief To Blu-Ray In November image
It’s hard to be certain about seeing a film with an odd premise. That goes double when that film is a romantic comedy casting a comedian with flair like Steve Carell as a doleful man and giving Ryan Gosling creative license to be Neil Strauss with hair. That being said Crazy, Stupid, Love is a surprisingly enjoyable romantic comedy that just likes to do everything a little bit differently. Did I mention even Kevin Bacon came out of the woodwork for the film?

If you missed it, don’t worry. You aren’t alone. While Crazy, Stupid, Love did respectably at the box office, it didn’t crush, making $108 million worldwide. You’ll be able to remedy the problem on November 1, when Warner Bros. Home Entertainment releases Crazy, Stupid, Love onto DVD and Blu-Ray. A Blu-Ray/DVD/ Ultraviolet digital copy combo pack will also be a purchase option. A full list of extras isn’t currently available, but Warner Bros. has alluded to deleted scenes and two featurettes called “Steve and Ryan Walk into a Bar” and “The Player Meets his Match.”

An ensemble romantic comedy does not absolutely equate to critical success – see Valentine’s Day, or rather, don’t. But Crazy, Stupid, Love proved it could be as wrenching as Love Actually and as witty as the When Harry Met Sally’s of the world, with a twist. Minus an ending that perhaps dragged a little long, Crazy, Stupid, Love may have been the best little rom com this summer had to offer. See it. It might just warm you up as the winter is coming.

Johnny Depp Recovers From A Wild Night In New Rum Diary Poster

t would seem that FilmDistrict doesn't feel like they need Johnny Depp's face to sell audiences on Bruce Robinson's The Rum Diary. While the international poster we reported on yesterday brought us so close to Johnny Depp that we could almost see his pores, the US posters have been going a more creative route. Earlier this month we received the film's first poster, which spelled the title of the film in alcohol miniatures, and today a new one-sheet has premiered featuring Depp with his back to the camera.

I think this is a fantastic poster. While I'm sure the ladies will appreciate the shirtless, pantless rear view of the movie's star, it also does a great job setting the illusion of chaos - something that will hopefully be able to sell the movie. I don't know about you, but I can't even imagine the kind of night that would result in a goldfish, a gun, and bowling pins lying on the floor of my room.

Set to be released on October 28th, The Rum Diary is based on the novel by Hunter S. Thompson and chronicles the tale of a journalist named Paul Kemp (Depp) as he lives life in San Juan, Puerto Rico during the late 1950s. The film has an amazing supporting cast that includes Aaron Eckhart, Richard Jenkins, Amber Heard, Giovanni Ribisi and Michael Rispoli

Like The Film, The Hangover Part II Blu-Ray Has Some Problems

Like The Film, The Hangover Part II Blu-Ray Has Some Problems image
The Hangover Part II bombed critically, earning itself a more rotten tomato than director Todd Philip’s last film, the ill-remembered Due Date. I think my favorite part may have been the fact the production was sued over Ed Helm’s copycat tattoo. Regardless of where The Hangover Part II landed critically, it did quite well at the box office. Now Warner Bros. is hoping to capitalize off of some holiday season success.

The Hangover Part II will appear on Blu-Ray and DVD on December 6. Blu-Ray copies will come in a combo pack featuring the company’s new ultraviolet accessible digital copy, a technology that Sony is also trying out. There’s no word yet on whether or not the ultraviolet copies will maintain relevance. However, forcing buyers to purchase a more costly combo pack just seems like another way to scrimp a little more money from people’s wallets, which is likely more annoying than the fact the comedy release won’t even come in an unrated edition.

The good news is, if you were a Hangover Part II fan and you don’t mind checking out the combo pack, you will get several bonus features. Gimmicky-but-fun features will include a laugh track, a gag reel, and a mash-up of the action scenes. A segment on Todd Philips's comedy will also be included, as well as a feature called “Bangkok Tour With Mr. Chow.” A special on the monkey character in the movie will round out the extras. Overall the at-home release looks decent, and it is already on pre-order sale over at Amazon, which just might make it the right holiday purchase for some juvenile boy you know.

Blake Lively Offered Lead Role In Pride And Prejudice And Zombies

Blake Lively Offered Lead Role In Pride And Prejudice And Zombies image
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies has had a long, hard road to traverse to get to where it is, which is essentially nowhere. Natalie Portman is still around as a producer, but she has long since backed out of the lead role, and the film is currently playing host to its third director, Craig Gillespie (who replaced Mike White, who replaced David O’Russell). It hasn't been easy, but no one at the studio seems willing to give up on this adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s highly publicized novel.

According to Twitch, Gillespie has met with Gossip Girl star Blake Lively and offered her the lead role of Elizabeth Bennett, a role that has been turned down by Mia Wasikowska, Scarlett Johansson, and Emma Stone. Lively has been busy herself not only with her role on Gossip Girlbut she found major roles for herself in Green Lantern and Ben Affleck’s excellent bank robbery drama The Town. The girl can act, that’s for sure.

Judging by Pride and Prejudice and Zombies' track record, this offer means absolutely nothing and Lively's will just be another in a long list of names that have walked away or stayed away. There’s a lot of potential for this movie to be lots and lots of fun, and kick off the “Quirk Classics” novel adaptation trend. But unfortunately if they can’t get it off the ground, we’ll never get the chance to enjoy it. The Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter adaptation, from Smith's first "from scratch" novel, has wrapped up production, but PP&Z is the book that started it all, and it'd be a shame for it to never see the light of day.

TIFF Favorite Sleepless Night Acquired By Warner Brothers For Remake

TIFF Favorite Sleepless Night Acquired By Warner Brothers For Remake image
These days it seems that studios are watching film fests like hawks, waiting to pluck anything with even the slightest buzz and fast-track it for a remake. Such is the case with TIFF favorite Sleepless Night. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the remake rights to the French actioner, which played as part of TIFF’s Midnight Madness slate, have just been purchased by Warner Brothers. The studio is also in talks to remake runaway TIFF hit The Raid so it seems Midnight Madness has been very lucrative for Warner Brothers.

Sleepless Night is about an undercover police officer who steals a considerable amount of cocaine from a ruthless gangster. As retribution, the gangster kidnaps the officer’s son and the film then becomes a race against the clock for our troubled protagonist to reclaim his son, uncover corruption, and avoid being arrested himself. There is certainly plenty of law enforcement intrigue for producer Roy Lee to work with here. Lee also produced the 2006 cop-and-crook thriller The Departed; itself a remake of Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs.

In testament to the velocity of the Hollywood remake machine, this story broke just as I had come out of a screening of Sleepless Night here at Austin’s Fantastic Fest. Drew McWeeny of HitFix.com introduced the film and joked that Hollywood would most likely remake Sleepless Night before we could finish watching it, turns out his assessment was entirely accurate. The reaction from the Fantastic Fest audience has been largely positive, but not overwhelming to the point that a remake seemed a lock. But I can say with confidence that there is such a solid foundation of gritty action material in Sleepless Night that an American remake could be something spectacular.

Captain America Sequel Probably Won't Arrive Until 2014

Captain America Sequel Probably Won't Arrive Until 2014 image

Marvel hasn't exactly been hesitant when it comes to capitalizing on success. After Iron Man shattered expectations in 2008, a sequel was immediately put into pre-production and came out two years later, and now Iron Man 3 is set to hit theaters on May 3, 2013. Thor, which came out earlier this summer, made over $100 million before the movie even came to North America and the sequel, Thor 2, is scheduled to arrive on July 26, 2013. But what do you do with Captain America? The patriotic hero's solo adventure was yet another hit at the box office, raking in over $350 million globally, but Marvel can't fill summer 2013 any more without putting its own films in competition with each other. The answer to the problem is simple: bump Cap to 2014.

Chris Evans, who stars as the stars and stripes protagonist, recently spoke with The Playlist and confirmed that his contract is for five more films, but fans wanting to see more of the character may have to wait two years after next summer's The Avengers to see him again. "Marvel has a lot of balls in the air, they aren’t going to cannibalize their films," Evans said. Because Evans is specifically signed on for three Captain America movies and three Avengers movies, you also shouldn't expect him to appear in any of the other franchise projects. Said Evans, "Out of those six films, if I pop up in one of those [other films], it counts as part of the deal. So if they needed me in a third Cap, and I say, ‘Fuck you, give me $30 million,’ well…they want to avoid that."

Marvel announced two secret release dates in 2014 last month, one on May 16th, the other on June 27th, so we can probably expect the second Cap adventure to fall on one of those days. Writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have already begun working on the script for Captain America 2, so it looks like they'll have plenty of time to tinker and toy and make sure that it's perfect. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Thor 2 Details Revealed By Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige

Thor 2 Details Revealed By Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige image
In the past couple of hours alone we've learned that Monster director Patty Jenkins is in the running to direct Thor 2, and that we likely won't be seeing another Captain America solo film until 2014. But for fans of the superhero genre, particularly those of the Marvel variety, that isn't nearly enough. So how about some Thor 2 plot details as the cherry on top of your sundae?

While reporting the news that Jenkins is a potential helmer for the God of Thunder sequel, EW reached out to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige for comment, and he spilled a bit of what we might be seeing in the character's next adventure. For starters, while Thor took us to the lands of Asgard, Midgard, and Jotunheim, the sequel will be exploring the other six realms. Furthermore, the movie will also develop the relationship between the Norse God (Chris Hemsworth) and his human love interest, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), as well as his father, Odin (Anthony Hopkins). Said Feige about the project, "[Thor 2 will] primarily be the journey of that character, of he and Jane Foster and how the new dynamic with his father is working out, as well as what are the broader stakes for The Nine Worlds."

I don't think I'm alone in saying that the scenes in Asgard were much more compelling than the scenes on Earth in the first film, so having the characters travel to the other worlds is a great step in the right direction. For those unaware, the other six worlds include:
  • Alfheim: Land of the Light Elves
  • Hel: Land of the dead
  • Muspelheim: Land of the demons
  • Nidavellir: Home of the dwarves
  • Svartalfheim: Land of the Dark Elves
  • Vanaheim: Land of the Vanir, a “sister race” of the Asgardians.

Michelle Rodriguez To Return From The Dead In Resident Evil: Retribution

Michelle Rodriguez To Return From The Dead In Resident Evil: Retribution image
Michelle Rodriguez didn't have what you would call a gracious exit from the Resident Evil franchise. Playing Rain Ocampo in the first movie, her character was first bit and infected by one of the zombies before being shot in the head by Matt Adison (Eric Mabius). But if you think a slight case of death is going to prevent her from coming back, apparently you couldn't be more wrong.

Bloody Disgusting has learned Rodriguez is set to return as Ocampo in Resident Evil: Retribution 3D, the fifth film in the franchise. The news has since been confirmed as accurate. Also returning will be Shawn Roberts, who played Albert Wesker in Resident Evil: Afterlife, though apparently that will only be a cameo. The two will join the cast that already includes Milla Jovovich (who returns as Alice), Sienna Guillory (who will play Jill Valentine for the third time), Colin Salmon (who will be coming back as James 'One' Shade) and Boris Kodjoe( once again playing Luther West). The new movie will be set in Toyko, Japan and is scheduled to be released on September 14, 2012.

I wonder how Paul W.S. Anderson plans to get around this one. Ocampo was most definitely dead by the end of the first movie, so it will take some seriously creative maneuvering to bring her back. Then again, this franchise is as much sci-fi as it is action and horror, and we all know that anybody can return from the dead in science-fiction. The question that remains, however, is what team she will be playing for after her resurrection.

The question that remains, however, is what team she will be playing for after her resurrection.

Johnny Depp Placed Front And Center In New Poster For The Rum Diary

There are thousands if not millions of Hunter S. Thompson fans who have been waiting for Bruce Robinson's adaptation of The Rum Diary, but that's not the biggest mystery behind the project's numerous delays. Rather, it's the fact that Johnny Depp, arguably the biggest star in the world, is playing the film's starring role. Now that the wait is over and the movie is set to come out on October 28th, it was even more surprising that Depp was all but completely absent from the film's first poster. It was a creative choice and one that was much appreciated by fans of clever designs, but it would seem that the international markets aren't messing around. IMP Awards has posted the newest one-sheet and it's 99% Johnny Depp.

In the movie Depp plays Paul Kemp, a freelance journalist that moves to San Juan, Puerto Rico in the late 1950s and begins to work for a small newspaper. Interacting on a daily basis with a full cast of colorful characters, Kemp runs into trouble when he meets a gorgeous woman named Chenault (Amber Heard), with whom he becomes infatuated, and her rich fiance, Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart), who is developing a land deal that may not be aboveboard. The film also stars Richard Jenkins, Michael Rispoli, and Giovanni Ribisi.

Baywatch Movie Back On Track With Script From Rescue Me Creator?

Baywatch Movie Back On Track With Script From Rescue Me Creator? image
The time to do a Baywatch movie, if a Baywatch movie absolutely had to be done, was probably 1989-91, when the red-suited lifeguards were in their prime and audiences camped out in front of television sets to see Pamela Anderson, David Hasselhoff and Yasmine Bleeth running. In slow motion. For hours.

Twenty years later, Hollywood is still trying to mount a proper Baywatch feature, and writer Peter Tolan may be the one riding to the franchise’s rescue. Now that his time on Denis Leary’s firefighter drama Rescue Me has drawn to a close (the show had its series finale earlier this month), Tolan tells the Matthew Aaron Show podcast (via JoBlo) that he recently turned a Baywatch script in to Paramount.

Oddly enough, Tolan says his script has very little to do with the original TV show, which he did not watch in preparation for writing the treatment. He said the tone of the script he wrote is closest to Ivan Reitman’s Stripes, and that there are parts written into the screenplay for Hasselhoff and Anderson, though they would not be playing the characters they played in the show.

That’s a headscratcher. With so many changes, why call it Baywatch at all? Is the brand recognition that strong that you wouldn’t just launch another lifeguard-themed project and hope it could stand on its own? Then again, reboots of TV shows have fared well, but primarily when they’ve held at least a tiny connection to the source material. As for Anderson, she has said repeatedly that she’s against a Baywatch movie. But if you promise Hasselhoff a hamburger, some camera time, and the chance to record the film’s theme song, I’m sure he’s in.

One of the great things about action movies is that even seeing small snippets without any narrative context can provide enticement to see the film. The added benefit of The Dark Knight Rises is that most of us are already dizzy with anticipation to see it. Therefore it wouldn’t take much to pique our interest. But these video clips from the set of Christopher Nolan’s latest Batman outing go the extra mile; thanks to Coming Soonfor finding these YouTube treasures. These are not just shots of cast members milling about between takes or cameras being set up. No, first we get a vehicle smashing through a barricade and plunging to a sublevel of the highway…

Then we see that same vehicle charging through a gauntlet of explosions.

And, from another angle, we see that the perpetrator of all those explosions is a very familiar black tank.

How could anyone not be excited to see this movie?! These clips would suggest that Nolan will once again be incorporating a vehicular showdown into his Batman story. But the question remains, who is going to be driving that ill-fated truck? If Batman were firing at it, it would stand to reason that a villain is behind the wheel. But is it Bane? If the film incorporates any of the Knightfall storyline, Bane’s major story arc from the comic books, it could be a truck full of recently escaped Arkham Asylum inmates. In that storyline, Bane masterminds a mass exodus from the asylum and then watches as Batman systematically fights and recaptures all the inmates. When he is physically and mentally exhausted, that is when Bane shows up to challenge him mono y mono.

Whoever is behind the wheel, these scenes hint that the action sequences in The Dark Knight Rises will at least equal those in The Dark Knight, if not surpass them.

James Franco To Adapt Cormac McCarthy's Child Of God

James Franco To Adapt Cormac McCarthy's Child Of God image
James Franco’s dance card is filling up rather quickly these days. He’s lined up a wide array of projects like Oz: The Great and Powerful, Jay and Seth vs. The Apocalypse, and possibly even the biopic Lovelace just to name a few. Now, We Got This Covered is reporting that Franco will be adding another directing gig to his resume in the form of a Cormac McCarthy adaptation. Franco announced at TIFF that he would be helming a big screen version of McCarthy’s third book Child of God.

The plot of Child of God revolves around a troubled protagonist, Lester Ballard, who drifts further and further away from normal society and basically becomes a violent cave dweller. Throw in a compressed air cannon and this guy sounds a bit like Anton Chigurh, doesn’t he? Is Franco hoping to recapture some of the No Country for Old Men magic and/or critical acclaim? Is he eager to be recognized as much for his directorial prowess as his acting? It sounds like a stretch to assume so, but his attachment to this novel was a bit haphazard.

Franco initially wanted to adapt McCarthy’s novel Blood Meridian. In fact, he had gone so far as to shoot a 20-minute test of that film and was quite pleased with the result. But it appears that project has been put on indefinite hold so Franco has switched gears to Child of God. So why is he so desperate to adapt McCarthy? It seems there are two probable explanations. Either Franco is hoping to use the author’s stellar writing to garner some recognition for his directing work or he may just be Hollywood’s biggest Cormac McCarthy fan. The latter explanation instills far more confidence in this project than the former.

No word yet as to when principal photography or even casting will begin for Child of God. Franco just completed his last directorial effort, Sal, a biopic of actor Sal Mineo.

Sigourney Weaver Says They Won't Do Ghostbusters III Without Bill Murray

Sigourney Weaver Says They Won't Do Ghostbusters III Without Bill Murray image
Things are looking less certain for the third Ghostbusters, if what Sigourney Weaver said in this recent interview is true. Ghostbusters III may be without a cast if Bill Murray doesn’t sign on to join the rest of the original cast members in the film.

As we previously reported, based on comments made by Dan Aykroyd, it looked like Ghostbusters III was set to move forward with or without Bill Murray on board to reprise his role as the sarcastic but lovable Pete Venkman. When our own Eric Eisenberg sat down with Sigourney Weaver, she too sounded hopeful about the prospect of the sequel. Though she hadn’t seen the script, she did suggest the scenario that Peter Venkman is dead.

Now, based on a recent interview with Collider, it sounds like none of the cast will return for the movie if Murray isn’t on board. The site asked Weaver if she’d still do the sequel without Bill Murray and her response was, “No, I don’t think any of us would do it, if Bill said no. Why would we do that? I think the whole point is to get together and have fun.” She went on to say that pressuring him to read the script would do no good. “I don’t think that works with Bill. I did actually ask him about doing The Guys, so called the 800 number and left a message, but when he doesn’t respond, you know that he’s not interested.”

If what Weaver is saying is true, there may not be a third Ghostbusters film at all. Those who dislike the idea of the classic horror-comedy being brought back in any form would certainly love that news. As someone who sees both sides of the coin, I hope Weaver’s statements are true. The Ghostbusters are four things: Ray, Egon, Winston, and Venkman. They're a team. Louis, Janine and Dana are also necessary ingredients for the films. If they’re going to bring the film back, they should do it right and to do that, they need all of the necessary elements. That includes Bill Murray. If someone can produce a person that can in replace Bill Murray, go for it, but that’s a ridiculously tall order.

The above said, I hope Murray at least reads the script and makes his final decision after he sees what they have in mind for the third installment. It would be good news to hear that, after reading the script, he thought it was good enough to change his mind on the issue.

Weaver did say that Ivan Reitman told her that Dana’s son Oscar (“Named after a hotdog! You poor man!”) would be a Ghostbuster, should the film actually happen. At this point, it sounds like it could all depend on Murray.

Ryan Gosling, Joseph Gordon-Levitt And Alexander Skarsgard Being Looked At For The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Ryan Gosling, Joseph Gordon-Levitt And Alexander Skarsgard Being Looked At For The Man From U.N.C.L.E. image
Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ryan Gosling and Alexander Skarsgard: three of the most in-demand young actors working in Hollywood today. The first broke out in last year's Inception, is earning Oscar buzz for his role in the upcoming 50/50 and has a part in Christopher Nolan's final Batman movie. The second has been everywhere this year and his performance in Drive, which is set to premiere tomorrow, has earned the actor almost unanimous praise. The third is a star on HBO's hit show True Blood and, like Gosling, has a new movie opening tomorrow (Straw Dogs). You have to imagine that every casting agent in Hollywood wants at least one of them to star in their new project, but a new report from The Wrap says that all three are being looked at for one project in particular.

Following the announcement that George Clooney will be unable to star in the film, the website says that Gordon-Levitt, Gosling and Skarsgard are now being looked at for the starring role in Steven Soderbergh's The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Unlike Clooney, however, who was being looked at for the role of Napoleon Solo - the character originally played by Robert Vaughn- the three young actors are being looked at for the part of Ilya Kuryakin, Solo's partner (yes, I am aware how weird that sounds). The story comes from a source close to the production, who says that the three actors are just a few of the names that the studio is looking at, the full list including upwards of 20 actors.

Based on the television series that ran from 1964 to 1968, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. is about a pair of agents from the United Network Command for Law and Enforcement who are regularly tasked with protecting the planet from the evil forces of THRUSH. When I spoke with writer Scott Z. Burns a few weeks ago, he told me that the film is scheduled to begin production this spring and will be based on real events from the Cold War.

If you've ever had the desire to see a blond Joseph Gordon-Levitt, it may be in your best interest to contact Warner Bros. and plead them to cast him as Kuryakin. Any of the three actors would be great for the part, but assuming one of them gets it, who should be the one to take Clooney's place?

Christopher Plummer Rehearses For Richard III In The First Trailer For Barrymore

With the Toronto International Film Festival wrapping up, we've officially entered Awards Season. For the rest of 2011, a good chunk of new releases will be vying for Oscar gold, be it for their direction, writing, performances, or all of the above. One film most definitely aiming for Best Actor is the Erik Canuel-directed Barrymore, starring Christopher Plummer. Earlier this week we saw the first clip from the film and today TIFF has released a full trailer. Check it out below:

Based on the play by William Luce, Plummer stars as John Barrymore as he is rehearsing for a revival of his greatest work: Richard III. The movie is largely a one-man show, with Barrymore struggling to remember his part. When Luce's play was being performed on Broadway, Plummer won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play. The film premiered this week at TIFF, but doesn't yet have a US distributor or release date.

Super 8 Unspools On Blu-Ray And DVD November 22nd

Super 8 Unspools On Blu-Ray And DVD November 22nd image
In a summer of super-heroes and sequels, Super 8 stood out. Whether you were on board with J.J. Abrams ode to Spielberg and the "Amblin-style" movies many of us grew up with or not, there's no question that Super 8 was ambitious and original. If it failed, it certainly didn't do so for lack of trying. Thankfully, I'm in the camp that thought it worked remarkably well (with, granted, a few flawed spots), so I'm giving thanks that Super 8 has been announced for Blu-ray and DVD this November 22nd.

If you didn't check it out this summer, Super 8 is a love letter to both adolescence and the movies that still make many of us feel young, flicks like E.T., Close Encounters, or The Goonies. A group of young friends in the midst of shooting their own homemade horror movie unwittingly wind up in the middle of something much greater after witnessing a terrible train crash. Soon it becomes clear that the train was military in origin, and that it was carrying...something. Current It Guy J.J. Abrams directs alongside producer/muse Steven Spielberg.

Paramount Home Entertainment will release Super 8 as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack ($39.99), as well as a single-disc DVD version ($29.99). Here's what you'll get on the bonus features front:

Blu-ray
  • Commentary by writer/director J.J. Abrams, producer Bryan Burk and cinematographer Larry Fong
  • Behind-the-Scenes Featurettes
    • The Dream Behind Super 8
    • The Search for New Faces
    • Meet Joel Courtney
    • Rediscovering Steel Town
    • The Visitor Lives
    • Scoring Super 8
    • Do You Believe in Magic?
    • The 8mm Revolution
  • Deconstructing the Train Crash
  • Deleted Scenes
DVD
  • Feature Film
  • Digital Copy
The single-disc version will include the commentary and the "Dream Behind Super 8 and The Visitor Lives featurettes. Not bad considering many single-disc DVD editions roll out bare-bones. The one big disappointment with the set is that Mr. Spielberg didn't sit in on the commentary. Still, this one will be a guaranteed purchase in my household.

50 Cent Forced To Change His Movie Title

50 Cent Forced To Change His Movie Title image
Good titles are hard to come by. Artist 50 Cent thought he had one all set to go for the film he’s making, however he was forced to change the name when he learned that the title chosen was previously claimed by an African author who doesn’t want to give it up.

According to the Guardian, Curtis Jackson a.k.a. 50 Cent spent much of last year filming a movie about a football player with cancer, which he intended to tile Things Fall Apart. It’s a great title, to be sure, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that someone else had previously used it for their own work.

Described as one of Africa’s greatest novelists, Chinua Achebe published a book in 1958 titled “Things Fall Apart.” Upon hearing that 50 Cent was titling his movie the same, Achebe contacted his legal team and had them put a stop to it. The writer also refused the million dollar offer 50 Cent put on the table in exchange for the rights to the title, taking it as an insult.

As a result of this, 50 Cent’s movie has been retitled to All Things Fall Apart.

It’s hard to know what to make of this. On one hand, if this novel is really the most-read book in modern African literature (as stated by Achebe’s lawyers), then it’s understandable that the author wouldn’t want to see the title recycled for some other story. On the other hand, the phrase “things fall apart,” is a reasonably common English phrase. Sure, there are a lot of phrases in the English language, however, coming up with workable titles for films, books, movies, songs, TV shows, etc, may prove to be extremely challenging in the coming decades if none of them were ever allowed to be re-used again. Then again, 50 Cent managed to find a way around it by adding the “All” part, which shifts the context of the title a little bit but sticks closely to the original idea.

Snoop Dogg Signed On For Blues Singer Biopic

Snoop Dogg Signed On For Blues Singer Biopic image
Looks like it’s time for a certain rap icon to trade in his gin and juice for some rhythm and blues. According to Deadline, west coast rap legend Snoop Dogg (née Calvin Broadus) is set to star in The Legend of Fillmore Slim. The film is a biopic of blues singer/guitarist Clarence “Fillmore Slim” Sims and is set to be directed by relative unknown Hawthorne James. Well I’ll be heezied for sheezy.

Snoop’s attraction to this subject matter may not be readily apparent at first. I mean, why would he want to take part in a biopic of a musician renowned in a genre outside his own? But it turns out that part of Fillmore Slim’s colorful past includes not only blues music, but also a significant amount of pimping. Slim made quite the name for himself in San Francisco during the 1960s and 1970s as much for his nefarious entrepreneurialism as he did for his music. He was called “The West Coast Godfather of the Game” and “The Pope of Pimping.” One need only listen to one or two Snoop Dogg tracks to understand that he has quite the affinity for pimp subculture. But really, a rapper staring in a biopic about a blues singer? Who’d want to see that?

I would, for one. There exists a stigma that musicians, rappers included, who cross over into the world of acting do so without much proficiency. But hip-hop artists like Mos Def, Common, and Ludacris have demonstrated legitimate talent in front of the camera. For his part, Snoop proved charming and impossibly likable as Huggy Bear in 2004’s Starsky and Hutch while 2001’s Training Day showcased his naturalism and street authenticity. It will be interesting to see what he can do with a role like this and whether or not he will do his own blues vocals.

The Legend of Fillmore Slim begins pre-production in December en route to a March start date.

Denzel Washington Offered Lead Role In The Secret In Their Eyes Remake

Denzel Washington Offered Lead Role In The Secret In Their Eyes Remake image
For a little while, Denzel Washington’s name was bandied about as a possible lead for Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake before the Do the Right Thing director went with Josh Brolin (a fine choice, in and of itself). As it turns out, Washington was circling a remake project. It just wasn’t Lee’s.

Instead, the Oscar winner has been offered the lead role in Billy Ray’s remake of the Argentinian thriller The Secret In Their Eyes, according to TwitchFilm. Winner of the 2010 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, Eyes tells a mystery that spans generations as a retired legal counselor continues to investigate a case that plagued him when he was young, inexperienced, and in love with his female supervisor. Washington would play the main character, who was portrayed by Ricardo Darin in the original.

Directed by Juan José Campanella, Eyes stood out for its twisty plotting, meticulous camera movement (the single-take camera pan through a full soccer stadium needs to be seen to be believed) and a whopper of an ending that was as downbeat as it was appropriate. Ray can handle the material – his Shattered Glass was damn-near flawless – particularly with Washington as a collaborator.

Now we just need to see if Denzel is interested. He just signed up for Flight with Robert Zemeckis, so an Eyes remake would come after that, should it come together at all. I’m still not a proponent of remakes. But if studios plan on continuing the lazy trend, picking strong material like Eyes and handing it over to the likes of Billy Ray and Denzel Washington is the right way to go.

Real Steel Director Shawn Levy Already Has Ideas For The Sequel

Real Steel Director Shawn Levy Already Has Ideas For The Sequel image
Real Steel hasn’t even hit theaters yet and there’s already buzz about a sequel. Of course, nothing is set in stone at this point, but word is, director Shawn Levy sounds up to the task of taking the robot-boxing story even further, should things work out for the first one when it’s released next month.

Real Steel is set in the near future when robot boxing has taken the place of human boxing among people who love to watch stuff punching other stuff. At the center of the story is Hugh Jackman’s character, a former boxer who uncovers a robot designed to shadow movements and trains it to fight in the ring. Evangaline Lily, Dakota Goyo, Kevin Durand and Anthony Mackie are also set to star. At best, the film could be a sort of comeback story channeling the spirit of Rocky and other big-hearted sports films of the past. At worst, it’s a movie about robots smashing each other to bits. Ideally, it’ll be a little bit (or a lot) of both. Regardless of what it is, in the end, if does well at the box office, a sequel could follow.

BleedingCool.com spoke with Levy following the London premiere of Real Steel, and it sounds like the director is up to the task of doing the sequel. On the subject of returning to the story for another film, Levy said:

"We really fricking hope so… Some of the notions we’re playing with… for instance we went very anthropomorphic in both the design and the movement of the robots in this movie, I think we can really blow that out. The class warfare between underworld and [World Robot Boxing], that’s something that seems rich. The evolution of this father and son’s relationship, and Hugh’s relationship with Evangeline…"

It sounds like Levy sees ways to take the story and the robots even further, which is good news for those of us who already think the first film looks pretty good. If things go well for the film at the box office, there could be more robot fights in store for movie-goers down the line. Bleeding Cool had good things to say about the film itself. Hopefully we'll be hearing more good feedback on the movie as the release date approaches.

Will Forte Adds His Name To Ben Stiller And Vince Vaughn's Neighborhood Watch

Will Forte Adds His Name To Ben Stiller And Vince Vaughn's Neighborhood Watch image
Akiva Schaffer’s Neighborhood Watch is filling up with funny people. Will Forte, ensemble player on Saturday Night Live and star of his own cult film, MacGruber, is the latest name added to a cast that already included Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and Rosemarie DeWitt.

The high-concept comedy revolves around suburban husbands and fathers who form a neighborhood watch program as an excuse to get out of their houses and escape their wives and children. But problems arise when the movie takes a sharp left turn and the Watch men stumble on an alien conspiracy, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Hey, if it’s funny, we’ll follow these guys anywhere. Let’s just hope Schaffer, who directed Hot Rod with Andy Samberg in 2007, can turn Watch into more than a glorified SNL skit.

Forte, meanwhile, has been stringing together back-to-back projects that would have other comedians salivating. In addition to recurring roles on the very funny 30 Rock and lending his voice to FOX’s The Cleveland Show, Forte has supporting parts alongside Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand in Adam Shankman’s musical adaptation of the Broadway smash Rock of Ages, and will play a part in Adam Sandler’s I Hate You, Dad, also with Samberg. Now let’s just hope Schaffer has room for all of the funny people he has poured into Watch, which is working from a Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg screenplay as it shoots for a July 27, 2012 release date.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Races Around New York City In The First Trailer For Premium Rush

Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Michael Shannon are two actors about to blow up in a major way. In addition to their individual movies coming out this fall, 50/50 and Take Shelter (both of which are considered by many to be some of the best films of 2011), each actor is playing a role in a major upcoming superhero film - Gordon-Levitt in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises and Shannon in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. But before we see the actors invade the comic book movie universe, we'll see them go head-to-head in David Koepp's Premium Rush.

Columbia Pictures has released the first trailer for the movie, which you can check out below

In the film, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Wilee, a bike messenger working in New York City. One day he is tasked with getting an envelope across town. While this seems like a normal job, he's stopped by a corrupt cop (Shannon), who needs the information that Wilee has been assigned to deliver. This begins an epic chase through the city, as Wilee tries to get the envelope where it needs to go before it's too late. The film co-stars Jamie Chung, Aasif Mandvi, and Dania Ramirez and is set to be released on January 13, 2012.
