THR has learned that New Line will officially be rebooting the Mortal Kombat franchise with a new movie. The move was spurred by the popularity of Tancheroen's online series, each episode of which was viewed over three million times. Tancharoen, whose previous film credits include the remake of Fame and this summer's Glee: The 3D Concert Movie is set to direct, while Oren Uziel, who wrote the short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth that started it all. The article says that no actors are currently attached and that the movie won't be connected to the digital series, which included stars like Michael Jai White (as Jax) and Jeri Ryan (as Sonya Blade).
We are still waiting for a quality videogame adaptation, so I wouldn't get my hopes up too high about this one. That said, the digital series was fun (if not a bit short and choppy) and so long as they keep the tone it could be successful. One can expect that no cast is attached yet because they want more high profile names, so let's get the get the fantasy casting started, shall we? Who do you think should play Sub Zero? How about Scorpion? Reptile? Johnny Cage? Leave your ideas in the comments section below.
